Orientation and Onboarding

Once you've made a great hire there are crucial steps to ensuring employee retention and satisfaction.

Having a plan for orientation and onboarding will not only help your new employee feel more comfortable and confident in their role with your company, it will increase productivity, engagement and long term commitment.

Be Ready for the First Day:

  • Ensure the new employee knows where to park, who to report to, and what to bring, as well as dress code

  • Welcome them with a tour of the workplace and introductions to staff

  • Fill out payroll paperwork including tax forms, direct deposit forms, benefits, etc.

  • Have an employee handbook and/or procedure manual ready for their review

  • Have work station set up including all IT, computer logins, access, accounts, tools, supplies, etc.

  • Assign a peer mentor who will train them and who they can go to with questions

  • Have a training plan and schedule including what needs to be done, who will do it and when will it happen

Orientation should include:

  • Company Mission, Vision, History, Culture, Values, Goals and Products

  • Company Policies

  • Health & Safety

  • Compensation & Benefits

  • Review Onboarding Plan

Onboarding is an ongoing process dedicated to welcoming, acclimating, guiding and developing your new employee.

Onboarding includes:

  • Reviewing the job they were hired for, how it fits in with the overall organization and its impact and opportunities for advancement.

  • Communicating measurable objectives and setting performance and development goals.

  • Schedule regular check ins to discuss tasks, projects, questions and concerns.

  • Conduct formal reviews to ensure training goals are being met and employee is performing according to expectations.

  • Solicit feedback from new employee about company culture, processes and experience to allow them to feel engaged and valued and for the learning and development of the manager and company.
